As the social exchange of meaning, text is the product of a number of meaning-making resources. It is the "output" of meaning-making systems, and its record is amenable to systematic analysis. It is also a dynamic process that consists of continuous selection from those resources (text as part of a communicative event) where choices at one stage affect choices that follow. _ Language as Function Following Halliday (1978, 1994), I will recognize that language resources are organized along the lines of three general functions.

Halliday (1978) comments: On the one hand, "function" refers to the social meaning of speech acts, in contexts of language use; on the other hand, it refers to components of meaning in the language system, determining the internal organization of the system itself. But the two are related simply as actual to potential; the system is a potential for use. (p, 72) Texts in use (real texts) realize the potential of all three types of function simultaneously. Although analyzing the linguistic patterns of texts requires us to speak about one function at a time, we must recognize that the three functions are interdependent.
