Anne Seller. Space to dream I was born in a small Yorkshire town. My father was a lance corporal and my mother was a nurse. After the war he became a teacher and she became a factory worker. I grew up in a village near Bedford. Black, working-class, ‘other’ women: they all have an identity they can be proud of. There’s an asymmetry here – and a problem, which shows itself clearly in discussions: ‘I’m proud of being working class, and I don’t want that made WHOSE EDUCATION IS IT ANYWAY? ’ Class, in this country at any rate, means we despise our own roots and feel guilty about it.

I was, oh, 28 or 29. I put myself back to school because I was determined. I read the plays through and I had another friend at work to read together with. We did it together and enjoyed it. But my husband was one of those men who thinks that as a woman I should not be educated. He did not help. I failed but I took it again. I can’t remember if I passed it the second time or the third time but I was determined. I kept going back until I passed. On my own, I passed. And now I am 60 years old and I am doing my A-level.

This is misleading. To have a say is, precisely, to challenge the more powerful – who got power by dominating available air spaces. More powerful people have, of course, choices about how to exercise it, including in ways that will give up WHOSE EDUCATION IS IT ANYWAY? 35 some of their airtime. Having a say is learnt in relationship, with and against others. As Arendt (1958: 190) writes: Action . . always establishes relationships and therefore has an inherent tendency to force open all limitations and cut across all boundaries .
