A. Absorption of Impurities in Oxide Glasses Impurities may enter into the glass structure in a variety of positions. For example in a silicate glass, the possibilities generally fall into three major categories: (1) a network-modifying cation position surrounded by six or more oxygens, (2) a network-forming cation position with four-fold oxygen coordination, replacing Si 4 + , and (3) a network-forming anion position, replacing an oxygen. Some impurities can enter the glass network in more than one position, in different valence states as well as with different oxygen coordination numbers.
